Central America’s most politically organized power and one of the area’s most developed countries, Costa Rica’s lack of a national military have led many to dub it “The Switzerland of Latin America.” Despite being one of the more stable and peaceful Latin American countries as well as a major tourist destination, in reality, the World Bank estimated 22% of Costa Rican households are living in poverty (2014) and 5% of school-age children are not attending school. About 20% of Costa Ricans live below the national poverty line. The wealthiest 20 percent of the population control more than half of the total national income. Costa Rica is currently ranked 69th out of 177 in the UNDP’s Human Development Index.
